Useful tips
- First you need to ask yourself this: Do I want my painting to communicate a message, a theme, express a feeling? or do I just need a complimentary color fill for a large empty wall?
- Experiment with complimentary colors to create a striking contrast. If your sofa is green choose a painting with a red overall theme. Match blue with orange, violet with yellow.
- Choose from shades of colors. If your table, lamp cover or flower vase is orange choose from the wide range of warm colors from red to yellow. Or from dark brown to beige. To create an atmosphere be consistent with colors as these infuse a sense of artistic touch to your otherwise cluttered living room. The most important rule is to avoid different shades of the same colour. This is a common mistake: people think green will match green, blue will match blue etc. The result in most cases is an over striking effect that eclipses any details.
- The Genre of a painting is crucial to the visual impact you're after. Let's say you're a graffiti gothic artist and your back is full of tattoos. I highly doubt you'll be after a serene abstract painting with lots of curves or a ballet dancer print for instance. Match your persona with your painting. Express yourself, stretch your limits and don't be afraid to experiment. If you're the classical romantic type, choose a famous portrait reproduction, a landscape or an abstract painting. If you're the creative type choose surrealist and impressionist artists. A photographer might be after nude paintings. Personalities and paintings always match in one way or another because there is an artist in each one of us, we appreciate art by instinct because Art after all is the expression of the soul. Match your soul with your painting and it'll live on your wall for long.
- Match your current interior’s style – Don’t forget, your new painting must work with your current furniture and its style. It will create a visual link. A classical oil on canvas portrait may look out of place in a minimalist Japanese style living room. Your furniture already creates a decorative statement. Make sure your new painting works well with it.
- Make the painting the center of attraction of your room by playing down the other design elements such as window coverings, carpeting, wall coverings, and even furniture. A room crowded with other colors, textures, and objects will take the spotlight away from the art.
- Paintings are best placed between or under lights (the latter, preferably). For example, if your wall has two light sources on either side, the painting is best placed in between with the center of the painting at eye level. If the wall where you want to place the painting is empty, the center of the painting is still placed at eye level but a light source above the painting is recommended to bring out the best effect of the painting.
